About The Position

Munson is seeking a Grounds Technician to perform a variety of work related to the appearance and condition of Munson’s properties including museum and campus grounds, sidewalks, walkways, parking lots, and green space. Job Summary Under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor, the Grounds Technician safely operates and maintains hand and power tools such as chainsaws, hedge trimmers and power/ push mowers, leaf blowers and plow truck, UTV (Bobcat), compact tractor with electric loader. Candidates must have the ability to safely tow and backup a 12’ dump trailer with electric brakes. Because this position calls for the operation of large equipment, selected candidate will need a valid NY State driver’s license with acceptable driving record. This full-time position has a regular schedule of Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a 40-hour workweek. Additional hours or possible days may be necessary to meet department needs. Requirements

  • Minimum qualifications of a high school diploma or GED and 1 year experience in a similar position.
  • Ability to repair, maintain and utilize equipment used in the process of landscaping and grounds maintenance
  • Valid NY State driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Effective organizational and time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and follow through on all assignments with minimal direction.
  • Basic personal computer skills that include the ability to send/receive e-mail messages and post information

Responsibilities

  • Lawn care and landscape maintenance: Water, weed, fertilize, plant and transplant, flowers and plants in planting beds, planters, and baskets
  • Mow and edge lawns Prune trees, hedges, and shrubs
  • Limb and fell trees as necessary. Using chainsaw or handsaw, cut up limbs and trees to appropriate size for disposal. Use chipper for mulching wood chips
  • View grounds, landscaping, and trees for potential hazards as part of regular daily grounds and properties check
  • Maintain tools and equipment: Responsible for maintenance and servicing of all Grounds Dept. equipment
  • Keeps spare parts inventory organized
  • Trash removal and disposal: Remove trash bags and recycling from the Maintenance level of the Museum of Art and outside of student housing and outdoor trashcans
  • Load scrap metal and take to the scrap yard as needed
  • Removes sealed containers of chemicals, including art supplies such as photography chemicals, for disposal
  • Loads other recycles and waste to OHSWA as needed
  • Pick up litter and organic waste from campus area, including litter in roadways
  • Snow and Ice Removal: Using shovels, snow thrower, plow truck, UTV or other equipment, remove snow and ice from parking lots, walking surfaces (sidewalks and walkways), stairways and ramps
  • Apply salt via spreader or by hand
  • Understand and follow OSHA requirements, Munson safety policies and practices: Complies with wearing personal protective equipment PPE in operating all hand and power tools and heavy equipment. Reviews SDS sheets as required
  • Safely handles and applies hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals such as fertilizers, oils, lubricants, greases, detergents and degreasers
  • Summer Arts Festival and other events: Assist with summer arts festival set-up and tear-down – fencing, stage, and Fountain Elms Invitational Car Show
  • Assist with other events with set-up and tear-down as required
  • Other duties include: Assist with other projects in maintenance, custodial, as required
  • Make pickups and deliveries for all Munson departments, including but not limited to, office moves, exhibition pedestals/risers/furniture, student housing furniture, items from painting/storage or other storage areas
  • Assist with large deliveries, such as clay, as required
  • May be asked to serve on Munson interdivisional committees
  • Additional duties as assigned
