This working hands-on Foreman position plans, directs and supervises grounds staff to complete cemetery care work assignments ensuring compliance with regulations and safety and ensuring cemetery services exceed customer expectations. Responsible for training and motivating the team.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience in landscaping, general construction, warehouse, physical labor demonstrating steady employment required
  • Grounds Specialist Foreman must be able to demonstrate all proficiencies of a Master Grounds Specialist
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery such as a backhoe
  • Ability to operate hand-held tools and equipment, including, but not limited to a shovel, tamper, pick, rake, sledge hammer, lawn mower, weed trimmer and leaf blower
  • Ability to accurately use measuring devices (i.e. tape measure, yard-stick, etc.)
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions
  • Physically agile and dexterous
  • Ability to operate equipment in a safe and careful manner
  • Ability to effectively work with others to accomplish tasks
  • Ability to communicate effectively with associates, contractor personnel and client families
  • Basic computer skills to enable retrieving and responding to email communications

  • Funeral industry experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Organizes and supervises the work of the grounds staff which includes: laying out grave sites and preparing them for burials, setting memorials and markers, performing lawn maintenance such as mowing, trimming, planting and snow removal, collecting trash or other debris from the grounds
  • Implements work schedule and guides coworkers for grounds and landscaping
  • Trains staff on cemetery maintenance and grounds keeping procedures, safety, and environmental regulations. Demonstrates proper operation of machinery and equipment. Recommends procedure revisions.
  • Develops a strong, trusting, and reliable team. Understands team members career aspirations and provide assignments to develop skills and close gaps.
  • Assures that the grounds crews’ uniforms, personal appearance, actions and demeanor present an appropriate image to client families.
  • Leads team for openings and closings for above or below ground interments, entombments and inurnments. Performs disinterments as needed.
  • Leads tent setups for cemetery services ensuring frames and probes are safely and accurately installed in the correct location.
  • Approves locations of all interments, entombments or inurnments are accurate, complying with verification procedures. Considers location of markers and nearby coping. Assesses whether temporary movement of the coping is needed and ensures materials are not damaged.
  • Sets, installs, and assembles foundations, memorials, and markers including granite and bronze markers. Able to perform backfill and tamping duties for interments and cremains safely using tools to create a tidy appearance at the site
  • May operate heavy machinery such as backhoe
  • Operates lawn and grounds equipment including push and power mowers, snow blowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers and other related power equipment
  • Maintains and protects Company assets by performing regular preventive maintenance on machines, equipment and facilities
  • Performs duties associated with cremations such as maintaining inventory and complying with federal and state cremation regulations
  • May assist in moving and installing burial vaults
  • Must follow safety rules and ensure compliance with the operating procedures of corporate, federal, state and local regulations, including OSHA regulations and Safety and Environmental guidelines
