About The Position

Position: Grounds Seasonal Intern Reports to: Director of Grounds and Lead Assistant Superintendent Classification: Non-exempt Seasonal Hourly Paid Internship. Department Expectations: 1. Follow all safety protocols and standard operating procedures, and training instructions. Wear required PPE at all times. 2. Report to work on time for all scheduled shifts. Notify a manager immediately if you will be late or absent. All time-off requests must be communicated in advance through your manager. 3. Maintain a professional appearance at all times. Hats worn straight, shirts tucked in, and golf-appropriate work pants or shorts are required (no jeans). Seasonal gear is permitted at the Director of Grounds’ discretion. 4. Carry yourself with professionalism at all times. You represent yourself, our department and Lake Geneva Country Club. 5. The Turf Care Center will be treated as if it were your home. Our facilities and equipment are expected to be “showroom ready” at all times. 6. Operate equipment safely and abide by your training. Phone use when operating equipment, or other misuse of equipment will not be tolerated. 7. Cooperate clearly, respectfully, and in a timely manner with peers and managers. 8. In the event of an issue, problem, or emergency, appropriately notify your manager and the Director of Grounds as necessary. 9. Ensure confidentiality of all club member and employee information and records. 10. Take initiative. If you see something out of place, unsafe, or needing attention, step in or notify a manager. 11. Abide by all other policies listed in the club’s Personnel Policy Manual. Individual Goals and Expectations: 1. Learn and perform high-quality golf course maintenance through hands-on experience. 2. Follow daily assignments with attention to detail and pride in work. 3. Ask questions and actively seek to understand the purpose behind each task. 4. Learn to safely and effectively operate a variety of equipment, including: a. Walk and riding mowers b. Utility carts c. Specialty tools d. Sprayers e. Aerifiers 5. Assist the management team with key agronomic practices: a. Spraying b. Topdressing c. Aerification d. Fertilizer Applications e. Sod work f. Irrigation repairs g. Moisture management 6. Learn how to hand-water playing surfaces and assist with utilizing the irrigation system to ensure consistent playing conditions. 7. Build agronomic knowledge through exposure to: a. Data collection b. Growth patterns c. Stresses from mechanical wear d. Disease identification e. Weather impacting agronomic decisions 8. Participate in daily communication with your peers and managers about the conditions of the grounds. 9. Lead small groups on projects or assignments with passion and pride. 10. Show initiative, curiosity, and desire for professional growth by attending daily meetings, turf talks, and other forms of education. 11. Maintain a positive attitude and rapport with the entire staff and represent the club in a professional manner at all times. 12. Contribute to upholding our standards by going above and beyond. 13. Keep a journal or running document with pictures and notes from your experience. 14. Participate in final evaluations at the end of the season. 15. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Actively pursuing a turfgrass or related degree (business)
  • 1-2 years of golf course maintenance experience preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Current State of Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator License or actively pursuing one.
  • Ability to physically lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary.
  • Capable of working in a fast pace environment.
  • Willing to adapt, follow directions and learn on the fly.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding environmental demands, including heat, cold, sun and rain, as well as exposure to chemicals and the nature of working outdoors.
