About The Position

The Grounds Maintenance Worker I position is responsible for performing physically active and routine grounds maintenance and custodial tasks at various public facilities, including parks, recreation centers, and golf courses. This role involves planting and maintaining landscapes, cleaning facilities, and ensuring safety and cleanliness in recreational areas. The position requires physical stamina and the ability to operate vehicles and equipment necessary for grounds maintenance.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older; high school graduates or GED holders may be 17.
  • Must be a United States citizen or have the legal right to work in the United States.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance and custodial tasks at recreation facilities, parks, and golf courses.
  • Plant and replace shrubs, flowers, turf, and trees.
  • Clean and maintain parks, golf courses, campgrounds, and recreational areas by removing weeds, debris, and trash.
  • Drive a pick-up truck or other vehicle to job sites with equipment and supplies.
  • Edge, water, mow, prune, and trim park landscapes and golf courses.
  • Prepare golf course areas for play by setting cups on greens and placing tee markers.
  • Rake sand traps and repair divot holes, ensuring plugs are placed appropriately.
  • Clean and maintain buildings and other facilities.
  • Set up facilities for various functions, including meetings and events.
  • Remove graffiti and perform minor construction and maintenance work.
  • Conduct daily inspections of assigned areas for safety hazards and report necessary corrections.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms and comfort stations at parks and recreation centers.
  • Install memorial markers and assist in interment tasks at Mount Hope Cemetery.
  • Prepare reports and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Scheduled general wage increases: 2% effective 1/1/25, 5% effective 7/1/25, and special salary increases of 5% effective 1/1/25 and 1/1/26.
  • Automatic enrollment in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS) for eligible benefitted employees hired on or after July 10, 2021.
