About The Position

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is looking for a Grounds Maintenance & Operations Assistant to join our team! This position will perform day-to-day maintenance activities in any of the maintenance areas, including but not limited to grounds maintenance and landscaping within the park. In addition, the incumbent will also be responsible for upkeep of our park facilities, ensuring that they remain optimal sites for community events and recreation. This part-time position will work at least 16 hours per weekend with a schedule primarily consisting of weekends with occasional weekday and holiday depending on business need. Region Specific Information: The Central Region Maintenance & Operations Assistants will cover parks located in Central Charlotte, or Uptown area of Charlotte. A few of the parks within the Central Region are First Ward Park, Romare Bearden Park, and Freedom Park. These venues host many large-scale community events each year. Requirements

  • No experience required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges
  • General knowledge of applicable computer programs
  • Light equipment used in maintenance, grounds keeping, and construction
  • Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of this equipment
  • Basic tools used in maintenance and construction work
  • Operating a chainsaw and brush cutter, blowers, sweepers, and other assigned equipment
  • Performing heavy manual labor, sometimes in adverse weather conditions
  • Adaptability: Maintaining effectiveness when experiencing major changes in work responsibilities or environment; adjusting effectively to work within new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures
  • Collaboration: Working effectively and cooperatively with others; establishing and maintaining good working relationships
  • Communication: Clearly conveying information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the information provided

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload heavy material from trucks and vans
  • Move and aid in moving furniture or equipment and large and bulky objects
  • Perform building maintenance such as checking fire extinguishers, changing light bulbs, and unstopping toilets
  • Perform general custodial work
  • Perform general grounds keeping such as picking up trash and debris, shoveling snow and mowing the grass
  • Perform general laborer-type work such as digging ditches
