About The Position

Under general supervision of Supervisor, Grounds Maintenance, operates all grounds maintenance and winter weather equipment, applies herbicides and pesticides on turf and other landscape material using dedicated spray equipment; performs weed control, tractor operations and other surface maintenance on the airfield. Work may be assigned and monitored by lead person.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years experience in general grounds keeping.
  • Possession of a valid State of Texas Pesticide Applicator’s license or ability to obtain one within a designated probation period.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals including spray equipment.
  • Knowledge of FAA Part 139 rules and regulations for safe operation of equipment on the airfield.
  • Ability to operate a variety of powered equipment to maintain grounds and airfield areas.
  • Knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to identify weed and pest problems and employ the practices, methods, materials and equipment used in their control..
  • Ability to read and understand labels on herbicides and pesticides, calibrate equipment and determine correct application rates.
  • Ability to operate manual and powered tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to communicate clearly over two-way radio.
  • Ability to work alternate shifts, as required.
  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination.
  • This is a DOT-designated and Airport-designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and to submit to drug and alcohol screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, evaluates and determines appropriate weed and pest control treatment for outdoor grounds areas including operation of all spray and other mechanical equipment required to apply herbicides and pesticides to target pests.
  • Treats and sprays for weeds in the Aircraft Operations Area including pavements, lights, navigational aids, and fences.
  • Calibrates equipment for proper application rate, follows all label and governmental regulations, selects, measures and mixes pesticide chemicals.
  • Complies with all state mandated record keeping and completes annual training to maintain state pesticide applicator license.
  • Operates one or more of the following types of grounds maintenance equipment: out-front and winged riding mowers, tractor with batwing and other attachments, 2 1/2 -and 5 - ton dump truck, front-end loader, backhoe, sweepers, pressure washer, brush chipper, all-terrain vehicle, weedeaters, blowers, chainsaws, shovels, rakes and other landscape equipment.
  • Operates winter weather equipment including spreaders, plows, brooms, deicers, and multitask equipment.
  • May oversee and participate in the work of an assigned crew of employees and contract laborers; may operate vehicles to transport crew, equipment and supplies to and from work site.
  • May operate lead tractor on the AOA which includes determining best routing of mowing crew on the airfield and communications with Operations.
  • Performs operational inspection on assigned equipment and vehicles and performs minor maintenance as required, including simple sprayer and hose repairs, adding fluids and tank cleaning.
  • Participates in other grounds activities including the installation and maintenance of turf and other plant material, watering, mulching, fertilizing, and pruning, litter control, watering, trees, shrubs, and ground cover.
