About The Position

The Grounds Laborer performs routine and semi-skilled ground maintenance tasks to support the upkeep and operational readiness of the Fort Rucker Gunnery Range complex. This role is critical to maintaining range facilities, target systems, and grounds in a safe and serviceable condition, directly impacting the success of military training operations. The worker operates under close supervision and follows detailed instructions to perform maintenance, repair, and support tasks.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency (reading, writing, speaking)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in grounds maintenance or related field
  • Basic technical knowledge of grounds maintenance tools and equipment
  • Ability to operate gas-powered equipment such as string trimmers, blowers, and mowers
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and ability to follow detailed instructions
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Tier 1 security investigation
  • Lift and carry items over 35 pounds
  • Operate heavy and power equipment safely
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Perform repetitive physical tasks such as mowing, trimming, and manual labor

Responsibilities

  • Maintain grounds of range and training area property such as ranges, target berms, target frames, and training area structures.
  • Repair structures and equipment including fences, gates, benches, tables, guardrails, and outbuildings.
  • Cut grass using walking-type or riding mowers (less than 2000 lbs.).
  • Trim hedges and edges around roadways, ranges, signage, and training areas using hedge trimmers, clippers, and edging tools.
  • Use shears and other hand tools for vegetation control.
  • Spray vegetation with fertilizer or insecticide.
  • Plant grass and perform reseeding as required to prevent erosion.
  • Pick up and cart away leaves, paper, or other litter.
  • Remove debris from walks, driveways, roads, or parking lots using shovels.
  • Assist in repair of roads, walks, buildings, and mechanical equipment.
  • Clean offices, workshop areas, and parking lots by sweeping, washing, mopping, and polishing.
  • Responsible for policing and removal of brass casings on aviation firing pads.
