The Underground Groundman is an entry level position focused on the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role requires working safely with both energized and de-energized underground systems, including setting pad mount transformers. The Groundman is responsible for maintaining company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order. The position demands rigorous physical labor and involves understanding basic rigging, hand lines, lineman knot tying, and the proper use and maintenance of hand tools. Key tasks include assisting with the installation and hook-up of single-phase transformers, performing basic bucket rescue/escape, and understanding equipment setup and grounding. The role also requires the ability to work at heights and/or in confined spaces, comprehend minimum approach distance, and understand excavation and shoring requirements. The Groundman will check voltage on transformers, install and remove services, properly inspect rubber goods and personal protective equipment (PPE), and know when to wear PPE. Climbing various structures (wood, steel, etc.) and working in underground trenches and manholes are also part of the job. The position involves identifying different types of materials used in line work and understanding how and when to use Kellum grips. This role frequently requires working outdoors in inclement weather and a willingness to work with live high voltage distribution lines, performing all other related duties as required.
