A Grossing Technician in the anatomical pathology department is responsible for accessioning, preparation, dissection and processing of anatomic pathology specimens. Other responsibilities include participation in intraoperative consultations, gross room maintenance, and specimen management tasks. This individual may also participate in postmortem examinations.

Requirements

  • Education : Minimum Associates degree with appropriate science-related education requirements acceptable.
  • Licensure : NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist/Technician or Histological Technician license
  • Experience : Prior laboratory experience preferred; prior knowledge of medical procedures and terminology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, providing a general, logical and factual gross description - CPT 88300-88305 plus select 88307.
  • Appropriately orient, ink, section and select tissue for histologic processing.
  • Load cassettes into tissue processor using appropriate program(s).
  • Participate in intraoperative consultations including frozen section microscopy and touch preparations.
  • Assist with general gross room maintenance including inventory, cleaning, and instrument maintenance.
  • Responsible for accurate specimen identification, accessioning and requisitioning - maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process.
  • Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, New York State and Joint Commission regulations, HIPAA standards, infection control and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating in continuing education opportunities - acquire a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education per year.
  • Maintain slide, block and specimen retention systems according to department specimen management policies.
  • Process specimens for send out consultations and/or outside testing.
  • Participate in postmortem examinations.
  • Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
