Requirements

  • Minimum training/education required is an Associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory technology.
  • 1 year of laboratory training or experience in grossing preferred.
  • State licensure as required by law.

Responsibilities

  • Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling.
  • Perform gross description and dissection of specimens received.
  • Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification.
  • Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, marking and sutures are mentioned.
  • Review clinical information provided to determine what pathologic examination is pertinent.
  • Examine the gross specimen with knowledge of pathologic conditions that may be present and the questions that must be answered.
  • Dictate the finding in a clear, complete, sufficient manner.
  • Select pertinent tissue samples for slide preparation, providing photographs and/or diagrams of specimen and dissection of specimen, prior to and/or after dissection, when requested and/or indicated.
  • Escalate non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to a Grossing Tech II or Pathologist Assistant, as needed.
  • Comply with all OSHA laboratory safety standards and regulations.
  • Routine handling of biohazardous and/or chemical hazardous material.
