Under general supervision of the Pathologist or Pathology Assistant, assists pathology in the receipt, processing and organization of surgical tissue specimens in the Gross Room in support of the hospital's mission and goals.

  • Assists in the surgical pathology Gross Room procedures; accessioning of specimens, preparation and fixation of specimens, and preparation of intra-operative frozen sections.
  • Assists in pick-up of specimens from various hospital locations, verifying specimen identification and resolving discrepancies.
  • Also assists in delivery of specimens from the gross room to morgue, histology, storage, or other areas as needed.
  • Receives, identifies, processes, accessions, specimens from outside laboratories according to regulations.
  • Processes, prepares, and sends specimens to outside laboratories or department if necessary, accurately completing all associated paperwork.
  • Assists in maintaining general working status of gross room, including stocking workstations, completion of logs, notification of appropriate personnel of needed supplies, and general lab and equipment maintenance and cleanup.
  • Maintains chain-of-custody in medico-legal cases, according to SOP.
  • Assures all necessary equipment is functioning according to specs and provides appropriate documentation.
  • Immediately reports anything that is unacceptable to the area coordinator and/or supervisor.
  • Completes all quality assurance logs and immediately reports anything that is unacceptable to the area coordinator and/or supervisor.
  • Documents all QA work and resolutions.
  • Reports medical and operational problems to the Pathologists, Pathology Assistants, Manager and/or Coordinator, as required.
  • May be assigned to train staff in all non-grossing duties.
  • Preserves specimens for conferences, teaching or research (i.e., organs, sections of organs), according to SOP.
  • Participates in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs in support of the department's, hospital's and the university's goals and mission of teaching and research.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field of study.
