About The Position

Groom is a live-in position with housing provided. When working with animals and on a farm, there are some days when hours may be longer due to emergencies. While the standard workweek is 40 hours, unforeseen circumstances or emergencies may require additional hours. Holidays are required, but for major holidays, a modified and abbreviated schedule is in place with shortened shifts. The schedule does allow for two consecutive days off.

  • Sit, stand, and walk for required periods of time, and in all weather conditions.
  • Visual acuity within normal parameters.
  • Successful completion of post-offer, pre-employment criminal background checks and drug test.
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
  • Work is performed on a smoke-free campus.

Responsibilities

  • Night checks
  • Early, late and after hours needs
  • Transportation of horses to vet clinic, or elsewhere, as needed
  • AM/PM feeding (including hay, water, grain)
  • Assisting with grain preparation, as needed under direction of Barn Manager
  • Cleaning and scrubbing buckets
  • Meeting trailers and assisting with arrivals and departures of horses
  • Meet vet and farrier when Barn Manager is not available
  • Clean paddocks regularly
  • Muck stalls
  • Turnout and turn-in horses (including dressing, blanketing, booting)
  • Assist with lunging and hand-walking horses under the direction of Barn Manager
  • Supervising students in the barn and while riding as needed
  • Keeping barn clean, tidy and organized
  • Medicating, wrapping, ice booting, bandaging under direction of Barn Manager
  • Assisting with setting courses, maintaining jumps and arenas (including manure cleanup, picking rocks, raking, watering, cleaning, etc)
  • General barn, facilities, and grounds maintenance, and cleaning (dusting, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, disinfecting, cobwebs, picking up garbage, raking, etc.)
  • Caring for horses (clipping, grooming, bathing, hosing)
  • Laundry
  • Cleaning tack
  • Assisting with camp, summer events, horse shows, etc
  • Restock hay and shavings and stock feed when delivered
  • Assist Barn Manager with inventory as needed
  • Tacking horses as needed
  • Light maintenance and repairs as necessary
  • Monitor horse welfare
  • Alert Barn Manager to lameness, horse not eating or drinking, or any other signs of distress
  • Provide high-quality and professional care of horses
  • Assist Barn Manager and Assistant Barn Manager with additional duties as needed
  • Ability to fill in after hours and on unscheduled days/shifts as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
