About The Position

Join our expanding team at Watson Metal Masters as a Class B Grinder Operator! As we experience rapid growth, we’re on the lookout for committed individuals eager to build their careers. This position performs precision grinding, finishing, and repair of metal vessel components to meet quality and safety standards. This role involves detailed surface preparation, seam blending, and inspection activities including dye checks and post-treatment repairs. The team member is responsible for accurately interpreting specifications, applying appropriate grinding techniques, and ensuring cosmetic and structural integrity of welded and fitted areas. Working with minimal supervision, this role requires strict adherence to safety procedures, proper use of PPE, and consistent documentation of quality control measures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma preferred but not required.
  • P.T. Certified
  • Intermediate understanding of blueprints
  • Ability to maintain equipment, including changing out wheels.
  • Ability to inspect grinding wheel for cracks, or ware.
  • Use proper wheel guards on all grinding machines.
  • Must be able to interact professionally, appropriately, and courteously with customers, co-workers and other outside parties.
  • Must be detail-oriented, with the ability to successfully follow through on assignments.
  • Must be trustworthy, dependable, and able to work well with other team members.

  • Safety is of utmost importance. All team members must observe safety procedures and use equipment and materials properly; must wear safety glasses and steel toe boots.

Responsibilities

  • Grind head to shell seams with few digs/lumps/hook marks up to 180 grit
  • Repair holes in non-code vessel seams/head seams/fitting
  • Conduct re-dye checks
  • Fill out the necessary traveler line for QC
  • Up to 180 or 30 Ra (roughness average) max grinding
  • Apply crisp tape line around taped fittings
  • Find and remove arc marks before grinding
  • Work without taping over imperfections
  • Identify gouge mark & weld or grind smooth
  • P.T. & repair as needed
  • Identify if fitting needs “put in the grain” or if it needs “circle tape”
  • Grind external or internal cylindrical tapered surfaces
  • Remove metal by the application of abrasives which are bonded to form a rotating wheel
  • Rough and finish flat, cylindrical, and conical surfaces
  • Determine grinding speeds, feed rates, holding fixtures, and grinding wheels to be used
  • Lift or hoist workpieces
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Safely use hand tools
  • Understand and follow all safety procedures
  • Wear all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
  • May perform other duties as assigned to help the rest of the Watson team
