About The Position

Eaton’s Research Lab (ERL) has an exciting and rewarding position as an Intern on Energy Systems to support research and technology development in power grid intelligence programs. This position will be based at our Golden, Colorado office, and the internship period is May to August, 2026. The hourly rate for this position is $35-$40 per hour per hour. Position Overview: As a key contributor to ground-breaking research at Eaton Research Labs you will be performing research and development into cutting edge power grid technologies with identification of market opportunities, implementation and demonstration in a realistic utility or critical facility environments. The successful candidate will be challenged with engaging in research programs on grid automation, cyber security and resiliency, power systems control, stability, and fault management.

Requirements

  • PhD Student from an accredited institution or MS student with 3+ years of Industrial or Entrepreneurial experience

Nice To Haves

  • In-depth knowledge of power system fundamentals and their practical application in grid modeling, stability analysis, and control.
  • Strong understanding and experience in EMT modeling for power systems with power converters, specifically, developing average models for converters with grid functions.
  • Demonstrated hands on programming experience with python, including scripting, data analysis, and automation of simulation workflows.
  • Experience using open-source power system simulation tools, such as OpenDSS, pandapower, PyPSA, or similar platforms.
  • Ability to integrate simulation tools, analyze results, and clearly document and present technical findings.
  • Good combination of education and application experience
  • Enthusiasm and capabilities in technology R&D, demonstration and presentation

Responsibilities

  • Develop electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation models for medium voltage (MV) solid state transformer (SST) architectures with grid interface and support functions.
  • Demonstrate the impacts of the grid on hyperscale data centers and vice-versa using EMT simulations.
  • Use large power system models with significant data center penetration to identify impacts and constraints on both data center operations and power system planning.
