G&EI operates state-of-the-art laboratories for electric T&D hardware & software validation, engineering studies & analysis, real-time hardware-in-the-loop testing, energy efficiency codes & standards testing, advanced metering, customer electrification & decarbonization, as well as data fusion and predictive waveform analytics. Our highly qualified staff leverage unique technical engineering design & fabrication skills to solve PG&E’s most complex engineering challenges in anomaly detection, system protection, electric reliability, DERs, V2X & electrification, microgrids, ADMS, DERMS, and Integrated Grid Planning (IGP). The Grid & Electrification Innovation Internship position will be at the groundbreaking edge of this through performing and supporting ongoing work in energy modeling and analysis, equipment prototyping, and laboratory and field testing across a broad spectrum of behind and front of the meter energy solutions. Work may range from general technical consultation or comprehensive support from planning through production implementation of new technology solutions. The successful candidate is expected to support senior engineering staff on key initiatives including but not limited to: Evaluating battery energy storage system (BESS) technologies and associated utility use cases and deployment opportunities. Analyzing non-traditional solutions for reliability improvement associated with overhead conductor, underground cable, and transformers. Supporting laboratory testing and analysis work for a variety of R&D projects associated with electric vehicle integration, battery energy storage, and secondary service protection in support of PG&E’s Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) program Reviewing and performing microgrid islanding studies and ad hoc power system analysis in support of customer incentive programs Developing project concept papers and research proposals for potential future utility and academic partnerships The successful intern will have the opportunity to learn about these activities as described above working with a team of experienced engineers and technicians.
