About The Position

The Greenskeeper position at the City of Allentown involves directing and participating in the maintenance of the golf course, including tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths. Under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Greenskeeper will also supervise the maintenance and repair of motorized and mechanical equipment. In the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Greenskeeper will assume their responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in agronomy or turf management.
  • A minimum of two years experience in golf course maintenance and operations.
  • Skill in the use of Windows-based operating systems.
  • Requires a Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Pesticide License, Category 7, Turf.
  • Requires a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License of the appropriate classification.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, and greens.
  • Working knowledge of seeding and maintenance practices of golf course turf.
  • Working knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pest control methods, drainage control methods, and irrigation systems.
  • Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work efficiently.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to maintain effective employee and public relations.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, and fairways.
  • Schedules work and supervises employees and the use of equipment.
  • Instructs equipment operators in the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
  • Supervises pesticide and fertilizer application and/or operates calibrates pesticide application equipment.
  • Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps and the drainage system.
  • Assists in personnel management including training, performance management, discipline, and safety.
  • Assists with the direction of a turf grass management program.
  • Assists in the construction, renovation, and/or reconstruction of golf course properties.
  • Assists in the preparation of annual budgets for maintenance and capital improvement.
  • Plans maintenance and project work under the direction of the Golf Course Superintendent.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of general and special purpose equipment.
  • Assists in acquiring equipment and purchasing necessary supplies.
  • Assists in developing an irrigation, fertilization, and pesticide application plan.
  • Keeps accurate and complete records in payroll, inventory, weather data, and maintenance procedures.
  • Programs the computerized automatic irrigation system.
  • Achieves and documents compliance with government regulations.
  • Develops and maintains an aesthetically pleasing landscape program.
  • Serves as an expert informational resource on golf course and turf grass management.
  • Supervises and participates in maintaining trees, fairways, greens, roughs, traps, and other areas.
  • Maintains a chemical inventory and orders additional supplies as necessary.
  • Provides quality and effective customer service.
