About The Position

The Graphics Specialist supports the Department of Commerce by producing high‑quality visual materials that communicate the Department’s mission to promote economic growth, strengthen U.S. competitiveness, support innovation, and provide critical data to the public. This role requires strong design expertise, an understanding of federal communication standards, and the ability to translate complex economic, scientific, and policy information into clear, accessible visuals.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and related design tools.
  • Strong understanding of layout, typography, color theory, and visual hierarchy.
  • Ability to translate technical, economic, or scientific information into clear, engaging visuals.
  • Knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements for digital content.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Portfolio demonstrating a range of design work.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Digital Media, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting federal agencies, especially DOC bureaus such as NOAA, Census, NIST, ITA, EDA, or USPTO.
  • Familiarity with federal branding guidelines, plain language standards, and government communication practices.
  • Experience with data visualization, motion graphics, or UI/UX design.
  • Understanding of federal records management and digital asset archiving.

Responsibilities

  • Design digital and print materials including economic reports, data visualizations, infographics, presentations, outreach materials, and web graphics for DOC bureaus (e.g., NOAA, Census Bureau, NIST, ITA).
  • Create visuals that simplify complex economic, scientific, and statistical information for policymakers, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Produce production‑ready files that meet federal printing, branding, and accessibility requirements, including Section 508 compliance.
  • Apply and maintain Department of Commerce and bureau‑specific branding guidelines.
  • Ensure all materials adhere to federal communication standards, plain language requirements, and accessibility regulations.
  • Support the development and refinement of visual identity systems across DOC programs.
  • Work with economists, scientists, policy analysts, communications teams, and leadership to understand project needs and deliver effective visual solutions.
  • Participate in planning meetings and provide expert guidance on visual strategy for public‑facing and internal communications.
  • Use industry‑standard design tools (Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, etc.) to produce high‑quality graphics.
  • Support multimedia projects such as video editing, motion graphics, photography, and digital content creation.
  • Maintain organized digital asset libraries in accordance with federal records management policies.
  • Manage multiple concurrent design projects in a fast‑paced, mission‑driven environment.
  • Track project timelines, provide updates, and ensure timely delivery of all visual products.
