About The Position

The Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) is a core element of the university's research infrastructure. Our mission is to support the scientific, scholarly, and creative endeavors of the faculty and staff at UMKC. The goal of ORI is to function as a highly trained, customer services-oriented organization whose primary purpose is to support externally funded research and sponsored activities within the university community. ORI has responsibility for pre-award and award administration and is the institutional unit authorized by the Curators of the University of Missouri to submit proposals to and accept awards from external entities for financial support in the form of grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 4 (four) years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 (two) or more years experience in a research administration role, preferably in an academic setting.

Responsibilities

  • Manages pre-award activities for an assigned portfolio of grants and contracts using knowledge of grant and contract management rules and regulations, technical expertise, and analytical skills.
  • Manages the daily operations and objectives in support of the assigned portfolio.
  • Contributes information and ideas related to areas of responsibility as part of a cross functional team.
  • Performs pre-award activities for a unit (school, department, or division) with ORS, including assisting the department faculty/PI in the development, preparation, and submission of grant and contract proposals.
  • Confers with PI and Pre-award support staff at collaborating institutions to secure necessary sub-award documents for proposals.
  • Assists the PI in the budget development by proofing the budget for inconsistencies and ensuring accuracy.
  • Reviews budgets for consistency with sponsor, monitors compliance with agency and University regulations regarding submission; verifies all financial information to include application of the appropriate overhead rate for the project.
  • Monitors and facilitates proposal process through the routing process in compliance with university procedures and institutional signatures. Obtains signatures as needed.
  • Monitors proposal status and advises PI on requirements and deadlines associated with research protection protocols.
  • Performs grants and research related training and education for staff, faculty, and students.
