About The Position

CONE is seeking a contract grant writer to support our small consulting business, which partners with socially engaged arts organizations in the Portland Metro area. We are excited to bring someone on to our small team who has knowledge of the arts sector, fundraising, strategic storytelling, and anti-oppressive practices. We are open to hiring an emerging or a more seasoned grant writer who is interested in growing with us.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success or clear ability/potential to write grants (professional or transferable experience)
  • Strong writing, editing, and project management skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity - including racial justice, disability access, and advancing anti-oppressive practices in the cultural sector
  • Familiarity with nonprofit structures - e.g., understanding of basic budgets or standard attachments (990s, financials, org documents)
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and track multiple communication channels/tasks
  • Ability to craft meeting agendas and contribute ideas and strategy in collaboration with others
  • Flexibility to take on projects ranging from short LOIs to multi-section government or foundation applications
  • Passion for the arts and its role in community and social impact

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience securing arts-related grants (success record is a bonus, not a gatekeeper)
  • Experience forecasting or supporting annual grant calendars, timelines, or revenue planning
  • Familiarity with nonprofit budgets and projecting income/expenses across a fiscal year
  • Experience working alongside production, education, or social service sectors (or strong adjacent fluency)
  • High comfort level with Google Suite and cloud-based collaborative tools (or demonstrated willingness/ability to learn quickly)

Responsibilities

  • Research and identify potential funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government sources
  • Draft compelling letters of inquiry, proposals, and grant reports, tailored to funder guidelines and client voice
  • Edit and strengthen draft narratives and budgets provided by clients or our team
  • Track deadlines, deliverables, and funder communications as needed
  • Collaborate remotely with CONE managing partner and directly with clients

Benefits

  • Flexible, life-compatible structure: ideal for highly self-directed, independent professionals
  • Scaffolding and mentorship: CONE invests in your growth even as a contractor
  • Portfolio-building opportunities: work with respected cultural nonprofits in Portland
  • Meaningful connection: engage with Portland's cultural and community-centered work
  • Collaborative team culture: retreats and team meetings are paid, not "expected extras"
  • Dedicated tools and access: research database, conepdx.com email, shared cloud storage - no need to self-purchase
  • Professional development: access to CONE's network and ongoing learning investments
  • Values-driven environment: rooted in equity, care, and creative strategy - not extraction or burnout
  • Collegial support in a dynamic environment: Working as a contractor can feel isolating, especially in a challenging and ever-changing funding landscape. CONE fosters connection, knowledge exchange, and peer support to navigate these complexities together.
