About The Position

LifeROOTS, Inc. is a mission-driven nonprofit organization serving individuals with disabilities and employment barriers across New Mexico. We are seeking an experienced Independent Grant Writer to support grant research, planning, and submission over a defined contract period. This role is remote, with periodic virtual meetings as needed. This is not an employment position. It is a project-based independent contractor engagement, ideal for an experienced grant professional who values clarity, autonomy, and outcomes.

  • Has demonstrated success securing grant funding for nonprofits
  • Understands grant strategy, not just grant writing
  • Is comfortable advising when a grant is not a good fit
  • Communicates clearly and professionally
  • Works independently and meets deadlines without micromanagement
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and ethical standards

Responsibilities

  • Research and compile a grant opportunity resource list aligned with organizational priorities
  • Develop a Grant Submission Plan identifying approved grant opportunities and deadlines
  • Prepare and submit a minimum of four (4) grant applications between January and June
  • Communicate professionally with funders for clarification and technical guidance as appropriate
  • Grant research (foundation, state, local, federal as appropriate)
  • Strategic assessment of grant fit and competitiveness
  • Customized proposal development (no boilerplate writing)
  • Budget collaboration with LifeROOTS leadership
  • Submission coordination and follow-up support
