About The Position

Primoris Power Solutions is seeking an enthusiastic Graduate Substation Engineer to support the engineering and design of electrical substations for utility and energy clients. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering who are interested in developing a career in high-voltage power delivery and substation infrastructure. The Graduate Substation Engineer will work closely with senior engineers, project managers, and field teams to develop substation design packages, perform basic engineering calculations, and support construction efforts for new builds, expansions, and upgrades.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering from an accredited university
  • 0–2 years of engineering experience, including internships or co-op assignments
  • Interest in substation engineering, power delivery, or utility infrastructure
  • Basic understanding of electrical power systems or civil site/structural design
  • Familiarity with engineering design software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar CAD platforms)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn engineering standards and processes
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Nice To Haves

  • Internship or academic experience related to substations, transmission, or power distribution
  • Exposure to utility standards and codes such as IEEE, NEC, NESC, or ACI
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or intent to pursue licensure
  • Familiarity with substation equipment (transformers, breakers, disconnects, steel structures)
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for site visits or field support

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and engineering of high-voltage and medium-voltage substations, including greenfield and brownfield projects
  • Support physical, electrical, and civil substation design activities, such as: Equipment layouts and general arrangements Control building layouts and foundations Grounding and conduit plans Bus configurations and equipment clearances
  • Prepare and revise engineering drawings, layouts, and details using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design tools
  • Perform basic engineering calculations related to grounding, clearances, structural loading, and equipment placement (under supervision)
  • Assist with the development of construction drawing packages, bills of material, and design deliverables
  • Participate in design reviews to ensure compliance with utility standards, industry codes, and project specifications
  • Coordinate with internal disciplines (civil, electrical, protection & control) to support integrated substation designs
  • Respond to RFIs and support design changes during construction
  • Occasionally support field engineering activities, including site visits and as-built documentation
  • Maintain accurate and organized project documentation in accordance with company quality procedures
