About The Position

The Graduate Student Mentor at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) plays a pivotal role in supporting the Director of the Caltech Center for Inclusion and Diversity (CCID). This part-time, temporary position is designed for a currently enrolled student in a research-based PhD program who is passionate about mentoring undergraduate students, particularly those from historically underrepresented and marginalized identities in higher education and STEM fields. The mentor will assist in the development and implementation of workshops and activities that promote diversity and inclusion within the academic community. In this role, the Graduate Student Mentor will provide one-on-one and group guidance to participants of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) and the First-Year Success Research Institute (FSRI). This includes assisting students with applications for research opportunities, graduate programs, and funding, as well as offering support in academic writing and presentations. The mentor will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records of student interactions and progress, ensuring that students are on track to meet their academic and professional goals. Additionally, the mentor will conduct workshops and training sessions focused on inclusive mentorship and research-related topics, such as graduate school success and academic presentation skills. The position also involves creating content for MMUF alumni and contributing to the overall programming needs of the CCID, including marketing and report generation. This role is integral to fostering an inclusive environment that aligns with Caltech's commitment to diversity and excellence in education.
