The Graduate Respiratory Therapist will perform routine Respiratory Care procedures according to established standards in General Patient Care areas and under direct supervision of a therapist in the Adult Critical Care Units, Pediatric and Neonatal Critical Care Units and the Emergency Department. Therapists are required to direct and oversee the activities of associates who may be assigned to work with them while performing advanced procedures such as mechanical ventilation.

  • Assess patients' respiratory status using basic assessment skills including chart/monitor review and physical assessment.
  • Perform basic respiratory care procedures including oxygen delivery and medication administration.
  • Assemble, check, and correct malfunctions associated with Respiratory Care equipment.
  • Under supervision of a LRT, perform necessary measurements/calculations and assist in determining appropriate parameters for mechanical ventilation.
  • Under supervision of a LRT, perform emergency and acute Respiratory Care procedures.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with other members of the healthcare team regarding all aspects of patient care.
  • Regularly communicate with shift charge therapist as to activity in area and availability to help.
  • Participate in department performance improvement activities.
  • Assume responsibility for professional development.
  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program for Respiratory Care.
  • Experience in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Successful completion of Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination (TMC) within 90 days from date of graduation.
  • Must acquire Licensure from the State of Michigan.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Satisfactory performance on the respiratory care medication competency test.
  • Completion of the respiratory department requirements for orientation.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment.
