About The Position

The Perfusionist Graduate, under the direction of a supervising Perfusionist, receives training on how to provide patient care in the form of operation of the extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace a person?s cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. Selects the appropriate equipment and techniques necessary for support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient, including the safe monitoring, analysis, and treatment of physiologic conditions under an order and under the supervision of a physician.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biology.
  • Knowledge of several cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies.
  • Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infants.
  • Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific paths of blood flow throughout the body, of pressures and gas exchange within the body adult, pediatric and infant patients.
  • Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition of the human body and use of blood products in association of support by extracorporeal circuits and devices.
  • Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow orders, take directions, and implement written perfusion protocols.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal support devices and providing patient care.
  • Ability to learn and apply regularory and accreditation standards and protocols that apply to operating room procedures and departmental policies and protocols.
  • Ability to work and cooperate in a flexible manner while learning appropriate delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach.
  • Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.
  • EDUCATION - Bachelor's
  • EXPERIENCE - Less than 1 Year of Experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Perfusionist Provisional (PERFPROV): Provisional Perfusionist license issued by the Texas Medical Board required within six months of graduation from an accredited cardiovascular perfusion program.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates with 1–2 years of experience are preferred.
  • Must have Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) and Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) - Texas Medical Board at time of hire/transfer

Responsibilities

  • Receives training to monitor the altered circulatory process and learns the process to initiate appropriate action when abnormalities arise, while keeping surgeon and other personnel fully informed.
  • Receives training in order to ensure the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used as well as the correct setup and breakdown of disposable and non-disposable and sterile and non-sterile equipment.
  • Receives training to appropriately monitor cell saver and operate the heart-lung machine, blood gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-assist devices.
  • Receives training to learn how to mix and administer drugs and solutions required for myocardial preservation in a manner that is consistent with industry best practices and established policies and procedures.
  • Receives training on adjusting gas flow and mixtures, the administration of anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit in a manner that consistently results in safe and effective procedures.
  • Receives education on recording relevant perfusion information during surgery and learns how to analyze and maintain records after surgery.
  • Receives training on performing quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
