About The Position

The Graduate Nurse demonstrates excellent customer service skills in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of MyMichigan Health. This individual works under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse mentor while carrying out designated skills that she/he has acquired in educational programs and/or orientation. The Graduate Nurse is not permitted to pass medications until licensure has been granted by the State of Michigan.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate of a RN school of nursing program or currently completing final course work (i.e. leadership or equivalent) and waiting to take RN State Boards and will be awarded a permanent position upon licensure.
  • Demonstrates ongoing competency in selected psychomotor skills.
  • BLS certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • The Graduate Nurse has three months to take and pass the RN State Boards or may be separated from the Graduate Nurse position at the managers discretion.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • MyMichigan Health is a technology driven organization and employees need to demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • An employee may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health.
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about the unit and hospital.
  • Overall vision is necessary; including reading, depth perception, close-up work and must have a peripheral field of vision.
  • Hearing and speech on the phone as well as in person are necessary.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally in person, on the phone and in writing.
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake
  • Is frequently required to physically aide patients; including lifting.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering, and feeling
  • Must be able to lift minimum of 50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • The Graduate Nurse, while providing direct patient care, functions under the direct supervision, direction and delegation of the RN mentor.
  • Patient Care: Provides nursing care under the direction of the RN mentor using the Nursing Process:
  • Prioritizes/organizes delegated patient care assignments.
  • Accountable for all patient care assignments and documentation of all interventions.
  • Performs technical nursing skills as outlined in standards and procedures manual and as described by unit-specific competencies.
  • Engages in reinforcement of patient/family teaching as delegated by the RN mentor.
  • Encouraged to be proactive in seeking learning opportunities.
  • Completes orientation.
  • Care planning for the shift with the RN mentor.
  • Communications:
  • Identifies and communicates changes in the patients condition to the RN mentor.
  • Demonstrates a positive personal approach and interaction with others.
  • Unit Responsibilities:
  • Maintains clean, safe patient care area.
  • Handles equipment appropriately. Returns equipment to proper place after its use. Asks questions about its use when necessary.
  • Considers cost in using supplies for patient care.
  • Assists with completing patient census correctly.
  • Personal Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrates ability to give care cooperatively with other patient care team members.
  • Actively participates in quality management and continuing education. Updates and maintains knowledge, skills, and competencies related to the area of practice and age(s) of patient population
  • Presents a clean and neat appearance according to the organizational dress code.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interpret information and reports pertinent data to the physician, including pertinent clinical information.
  • Assess learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural / spiritual variables
  • Provide education to meet the individual needs and ability to learn.
  • Participates in care conferences as assigned.
  • Develops and maintains good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel to meet the needs of each resident.
  • Demonstrates the ability to organize and prioritize the needs of groups of patients or an individual patient.
  • Demonstrates a general ability to manage assignments and perform routine duties on the unit.
  • Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates understanding of clinical pathways and utilizes appropriately.
  • Remains calm and efficient when working in stressful situations.
  • Documents in an accurate, clear, and concise way and includes pertinent clinical data.
  • Shares information and reports significant changes and/or abnormal findings to appropriate team members.
  • Participates in regulatory surveys.
  • Participates in the performance improvement activities.
  • Provides a safe and secure environment for patient care.
  • Remains current on new developments by reading professional journals, and attending seminars.
  • Demonstrates understanding of role in emergency preparedness procedure.
  • Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures as evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback for the following:
  • Adolescent - Over 16 years
  • Adult - 18 to 64 years
  • Later Adult - 65 years and older
  • All other duties as assigned.
