The Graduate Practical Nurse provides direct and indirect patient care services requiring technical and manual skills, within the scope of practice, that meet the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care, and meets the communication needs of the patient and family; Performs under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse. A Graduate Practical Nurse may only practice professional nursing under supervision. “Supervision” means that a licensed Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse is physically present in the area or unit where the Graduate Practical Nurse is practicing. The Graduate Practical Nurse is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Provides direct patient care within the scope of practice. The Graduate Practical Nurse also directs and guides patient/family teaching and activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of care within the Medical/Surgical Unit. The Graduate Practical Nurse is directly responsible and accountable for the care given to his/her assigned patients. He / She communicates with physician about changes in the patient’s clinical condition including cardiac monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. The Graduate Practical Nurse responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition and/or response to treatment.The Graduate Practical Nurse must take the NCLEX-PN within one month of hiring. The temporary Graduate Nurse privilege will expire the earliest date of any of the following: (1) 90 days from graduation date (2) when the candidate passes the NCLEX-PN®; (3) when the candidate fails the NCLEX-PN® test.
