Chautauqua Literary Arts convenes readers and writers of all ages in community, conversation, intensive craft development, and exploratory learning opportunities. Summer season programs for the Chautauqua Literary Arts department includes the Chautauqua Writers’ Center , Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (CLSC) , youth programs , The Chautauqua Prize , and the Chautauqua Janus Prize . The Graduate Fellow in Literary Arts serves as a key ambassador for the Chautauqua Literary Arts and its Writers’ Center programming. This immersive fellowship provides hands-on experience in literary arts administration, program support, and mentorship while engaging with nationally recognized authors and emerging writers. The Fellow will support the operations of the Chautauqua Writers’ Center and contribute meaningfully to the department’s educational and public programming initiatives About You The Graduate Fellow must be enrolled in (or recently graduated from) a graduate or doctorate creative writing program. This role is ideal for a graduate student or recent graduate pursuing a career in literary arts administration, publishing, arts management, or creative writing. About Your Stipend The stipend for this position is $6,000 for the summer season, June to August.⯠Also included is a traditional Chautauqua Institution gate pass, parking pass, on-grounds accommodations in Alumni Hall, and a meal plan. About Your Work Day Engagement & Communication with Literary Arts Speakers/Authors Serve as a representative/ambassador for Chautauqua Literary Arts and Education department as needed by greeting and shepherding authors throughout the Chautauqua grounds to and from programs and accommodations on the grounds. Workshop & Program Operations Support Provide administrative support for Writers’ Center workshops in collaboration with Director of Literary Arts, Literary Arts Assistant, Literary Arts Interns, and Alumni Hall Assistant to assist Chautauqua Writers’ Center Faculty in needs related to workshops, including printing and copying needs, audio/visual support, etc. Attend Writers’ Center workshops offered by nationally recognized authors; may act as a workshop assistant. Support operations of Literary Arts events, such as facilitating and staffing Q&As at various literary events, staffing book signings, supporting Masters’ Series workshops, and other duties as assigned. Ensure classrooms, meeting spaces, and public areas are clean, organized, and safe; arrange furniture as needed in spaces such as the Poetry Room, Prose Room, Ballroom, Porch, and hallways. Provide basic troubleshooting and support for audio-visual technology (projectors, screens, HDMI connections, adaptors, presentations, and printing). Facilitate and support events along the Poetry Makerspace Brick Walk stops (Alumni Hall, the CLSC Octagon, and The Smith Memorial Library) in partnership with Literary Arts Interns. Includes explaining how the interactive exhibits work in Alumni Hall, supporting and developing Poetry Pop-Up Events, hosting Literary Arts game nights for the CHQ literary community, and supporting related programming at the Library and in partnership with Youth & Family Programs. Mentorship & Community Partnership Opportunities Co-curate the Literary Arts community poem prompts and weekly poems in collaboration with Literary Arts Assistant & Interns. Meet regularly with Literary Arts Interns to develop mentorship skills and critique their creative writing. Support Chautauqua Literary Arts initiatives in partnership with the Friends of the Chautauqua Writers’ Center, including acting as a guest judge for the Annual Writing Contests. About Your Learning Experience⯠Support and attend Writers' Center workshops offered by the nationally recognized authors. Gain valuable experience in mentorship by meeting weekly with three undergraduate students to critique their creative writing activities.⯠Work closely with the Director of Literary Arts and other literary arts staff to hone your administrative, professional, and writing skills.⯠Participate in the larger Chautauqua artistic community by attending readings, concerts, etc. About Your Work Scheduleâ¯& Location Chautauqua Institution and Chautauqua Hotel Company offer flexible schedules, full and part-time, for seasonal employment during summer operations starting annually each June and concluding in August.⯠Seasonal employment may be available earlier (pre-season) and beyond season (post-season) based on business needs and candidate availability.⯠Scheduled hours may include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on the time of the events.⯠This position is at Chautauqua Institution’s main campus in Southwestern New York (Chautauqua County) . Graduate Fellow will be scheduled to attend literary events, critiques, and write for an average of 25- to 30-hours/week.⯠In addition to scheduled working hours, the Graduate Fellow will attend most Chautauqua Writers' Center workshops.⯠The Graduate Fellow will work with the Director of Literary Arts to form a working and writing schedule for the summer. About Living on the Grounds⯠Chautauqua Institution may provide limited housing options on our grounds or assist you with locating nearby housing arrangements for select opportunities based on business needs.⯠⯠This position provides housing in the Literary Arts Center at Alumni Hall. About the Referral Program Chautauqua Institution’s Referral Bonus Program is a talent solution to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse workforce that encompasses all the skills and experience necessary to deliver on our goals and objectives. Chautauqua Institution will provide a $500 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees referring a new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least 90-days from the first physical date of work. In the case of seasonal positions working less than 6-months, the new candidate must remain actively employed for at least 30-days from the first physical date of work and until the closing date of the season. The closing date of the season is the last Sunday in August.
