About The Position

The Graduate Engineer Internship at Mayo Clinic offers a unique opportunity for graduate students in engineering or materials science to gain hands-on experience in the development of custom medical devices. The internship spans from May to December 2025 and involves working in the Division of Engineering, which focuses on creating innovative solutions for patient care. Interns will engage in various projects related to microfabrication and process development, contributing to the design and optimization of medical microdevices while working autonomously within a supportive team environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Materials Science from an accredited institution.
  • Enrollment or intention to enroll in a graduate degree program in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science.
  • Completion of at least one year of coursework in a relevant Master's or Doctoral program.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Nice To Haves

  • Classwork and interest in medical device development, microfabrication, and process development.
  • Experience with direct-write lithography, stereolithography, spin coating, electron-beam evaporation, sputter deposition, laser ablation, plasma etching, and polymer chemical vapor deposition.
  • Strong computer skills in Solidworks or other 3D CAD software, layout software, and MATLAB.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with process development and optimization for the fabrication of medical microdevices.
  • Work on designing components and developing project strategies.
  • Gather user needs, requirements, and specifications for device development.
  • Evaluate commercial components and assemble prototype systems.
  • Perform design verification and validation, troubleshooting, and participate in design reviews.
  • Complete all internship-related assignments and reports for Mayo and the educational facility.
