The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition. The Conservation team is seeking a part-time Graduate Intern for a term of three months to provide support for the IMLS-funded project Conserving, Rehousing and Reunifying the Invaluable Elephant and Bovid Specimens at the American Museum of Natural History. The project will make critically necessary upgrades to the care and management of AMNH's collection of nearly 100 African and Asian elephant skills. This work will significantly enhance is accessibility and opportunities for research use. Collected during some of the most famous field expeditions of the early 20th centuries, the collection has enormous historical and scientific importance to Museum audiences. It is among the largest collections of its kind in the country in both number and size. The Intern will work under the direction of the AMNH Conservator of Natural Sciences Collections and as part of the larger project team. They will carry out efforts focused on stabilization, rehousing, cleaning and documentation of elephant crania.
