About The Position

This position is a 20 hr per week undergraduate advising graduate assistantship in the BSOS Feller Center for Academic Advising and Career Planning and offers an in-depth educational and professional position to a student working simultaneously towards a graduate degree. The areas of concentration for this assistantship include general academic advising, program planning and implementation, and general administrative functions.

Requirements

  • Admission and active enrollment in a UMCP graduate program are required.
  • Ability to manage graduate-level coursework along with work responsibilities.
  • Experience in student personnel administration, counseling, or academic advising.
  • Ability to learn and work in multiple University records and communications systems used to advise, support, and report data on students.
  • Ability to handle work with computer-assisted advising technology, word processing, and databases.
  • Excellent assessment and communication skills.
  • Organized, creative problem solver, effective in time management, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and flexible.
  • Must be a registered graduate student in good standing enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland and must be making satisfactory progress toward the degree.
  • Graduate Assistant I is for master’s students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising to students interested in or enrolled in majors in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
  • Work with students in academic difficulty, including helping them articulate problems and find solutions.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus services.
  • Conduct academic audits with students, including explaining graduation requirements, scrutinizing transcripts, correcting errors, and communicating with departments as necessary.
  • Work in conjunction with the coordinator of the BSOS Peer Mentor Program to plan and implement all aspects of the program, including co-teaching a one-credit Peer Mentor course.
  • Teach UNIV100, a semester-long orientation 1-credit course for freshmen.
  • Conduct graduation planning workshop sessions for new students.
