About The Position

Graduate assistantships include responsibilities for teaching sections of CMM 103: Fundamentals of Speech Communication and or staffing the Marshall Presentation Center, coaching The Thundering Word Speech and Debate Team, or completing other instructional or research tasks as assigned. As part of a teaching assistantship, instructors are required to perform all duties associated with university teaching. This includes assisting students, cooperating with the basic course director, posting and holding office hours, and abiding by all course, department, and university policies. Graduate teaching assistants are expected to hold class during all scheduled meeting times. Exceptions must be approved by the course director. Graduate assistants are expected to maintain satisfactory progress toward degree and remain in good academic standing. Graduate assistants are required to attend all orientation sessions, teacher-training sessions, and other meetings called by the course supervisor, director of graduate studies, and the department chair. Responsibilities for the assistantship represent an average weekly time commitment of 20 hours per week. In addition to the stipend, students receive a full tuition waiver. (The student is responsible for fees and books).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies or a related field.
  • Must be admitted to the MA program in Communication Studies to be considered for an assistantship.
  • Must be able to perform all essential job duties as outlined in the job description.

Responsibilities

  • Adjunct instructor of record and assigned to teach one (half-time appointment) or two (full-time appointment) undergraduate course(s) or lab(s).
  • Responsible for assigning student grades and following all University teaching guidelines.
  • Teaching sections of CMM 103: Fundamentals of Speech Communication
  • Staffing the Marshall Presentation Center
  • Coaching The Thundering Word Speech and Debate Team
  • Completing other instructional or research tasks as assigned.
  • Assisting students
