The Graduate Assistant position involves teaching responsibilities as an adjunct instructor of record, assigned to teach one (half-time appointment) or two (full-time appointment) undergraduate course(s) or lab(s). The graduate assistant will be responsible for assigning student grades and adhering to all University teaching guidelines. The assistantship includes teaching sections of CMM 103: Fundamentals of Speech Communication, staffing the Marshall Presentation Center, coaching The Thundering Word Speech and Debate Team, or completing other instructional or research tasks as assigned. Graduate teaching assistants are expected to hold class during all scheduled meeting times, maintain satisfactory progress toward their degree, and remain in good academic standing. They are also required to attend all orientation sessions, teacher-training sessions, and other meetings called by the course supervisor, director of graduate studies, and the department chair. The average weekly time commitment for the assistantship is 20 hours per week. In addition to the stipend, students receive a full tuition waiver, although they are responsible for fees and books.
