General Description The Grading Superintendent supervises field operations for all grading projects, ensuring efficiency, quality, and safety compliance. This role involves directly overseeing Grading Foremen and field crews, managing project schedules, and coordinating equipment and material deliveries. The Grading Superintendent may also engage in trade work alongside the team as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 3–5 years of experience as a Grading Superintendent or in a related role.
  • Strong knowledge of grading techniques, site development, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret grading plans, blueprints, and construction specifications.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in grading operations, equipment usage, and soil compaction techniques.
  • Excellent communication and team coordination abilities.
  • Frequent standing, bending, stooping, and crouching for at least 8 hours per shift.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs frequently and up to 150 lbs with assistance.
  • Walk on uneven terrain in varying weather conditions.
  • Maintain constant awareness of construction site activities.
  • Safely climb on and off heavy equipment as needed.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces and excavations up to 20 feet deep using ladders or crawling.
  • Outdoor construction sites in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to high noise levels, grease, dust, and heavy machinery.
  • Regular work near moving equipment and construction materials.
  • Handling of materials such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and asphalt.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and supervise daily grading operations, including scheduling workers, material deliveries, and equipment deployment.
  • Direct subcontractors and manage material inventory to ensure job efficiency.
  • Assess job priorities and assign employees to appropriate tasks.
  • Monitor production goals and ensure completion within set timelines.
  • Maintain as-built plans and ensure all grading work aligns with project specifications.
  • Communicate with engineers, project managers, and field crews to resolve conflicts and optimize workflow.
  • Submit weekly timecards, trucking reports, and work change orders.
  • Approve and track crew time and material usage for accurate reporting.
  • Complete weekly summaries of daily project reports for leadership review.
  • Ensure proper documentation and compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Ensure that all equipment is operational and properly maintained, working closely with the Equipment Manager.
  • Verify that employees have the necessary tools and safety gear to complete their work.
  • Identify and implement value engineering strategies to improve cost efficiency.
  • Enforce all safety regulations and OSHA compliance on-site.
  • Conduct safety orientations and coaching to promote a safety-first culture.
  • Monitor and respond to job site hazards and equipment operations.
  • Communicate professionally with supervisors, teammates, contractors, clients, and vendors.
  • Work closely with engineers to address and resolve site conflicts.
  • Perform incidental duties in other crafts as needed.
  • Available to work day or night shifts, including weekends, as required.
