About The Position

The Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI) offers college students hands-on experience in their field of study, enhancing their marketability upon graduation. The AI Research Intern will work within the Research & Development Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), focusing on various projects that support the agency's objectives while providing a valuable learning experience.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education
  • Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Computer (ECE) or Civil Engineering or related field
  • Academic work in related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Relevant work experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances

Responsibilities

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
  • Prepare and preprocess datasets, focusing on FWD image data
  • Enhance image annotation and labeling processes
  • Collaborate with the Research and Development team to ensure data quality and accuracy
  • Work on AI models or algorithms to automate or assist with data processing tasks
  • Document workflows and methodologies for reproducibility and knowledge sharing

Benefits

  • This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
