Role Overview: This position will serve as a Traffic Summer Intern for the Traffic Engineering Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing its assignments and responsibilities. Hourly Rate: The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor's degree. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows: The essential duties of this position involve traffic engineering analysis, leading to the preparation of technical reports (project intent or scope of work). The intern will learn and assist with traffic operations / capacity analysis for existing and future situations, reviewing traffic safety analyses, generating geometric treatment options, and producing documentation, preliminary cost estimates, graphics and drawings of those corrective actions. Safety engineer duties include collection, vetting and analysis of crash statistics and metadata; assisting with Road Safety Audits throughout the state; learning to provide countermeasure ideas and guidance on how to reduce the severity and frequency of crashes; utilizing and supporting targeted funds to improve safety and reduce crashes on the statewide system; reporting crash data, trends, and statistics; and providing technical support to internal and external customers. Traffic Design engineer duties include assisting with the design of traffic control devices (principally signals and signs/sign structures) and highway lighting, and reviewing design plans of those elements developed by others. The design function includes the development of plans, proposals, specifications, and cost estimates. Other duties include supporting the development and advancement of traffic design policies, practices, and standards; strategic planning for the office and division; and attendance at field checks and other project meetings as needed.
