About The Position

This position will serve as an Environmental Manager Intern for the Crawfordsville District, Environmental Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of INDOT District Environmental projects and support roles. The objective of the position is to provide valuable learning experience in the areas of environmental policy (NEPA and other regulations) and environmental investigations as they relate to the transportation industry, as well as assisting the Crawfordsville District Environmental Section in completing environmental assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the Environmental Section Manager.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a four-year college program and working towards a bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies, Natural Resources, or related STEM field
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Willingness to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Technical and professional writing skills
  • Ability to manage workload in both a team setting and an independent work environment
  • Proficiency with computer office software, such as MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Basic knowledge of GIS software, ESRI ArcGIS Pro software preferred
  • Ability to work outdoors, use hand tools, and lift fifty pounds
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts

Responsibilities

  • Take a lead role in preparing and reviewing documents to demonstrate compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and other related regulations.
  • Use ESRI ArcGIS Pro to research and prepare Geographic Information System (GIS) datasets for the preparation of maps and use in various assignments.
  • Conduct inspections of bridges and culverts for use by bats and birds for compliance with the Endangered Species Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, respectively. Conduct associated collection of guano for species identification.
  • Analyze the District Maintenance Division's Culvert Maintenance Work Plan for waterway investigation and permitting requirements.
  • Assist in data collection for and preparation of Waters of the U.S. reports for wetland and waterway permit determinations.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
  • At the end of the summer, the intern will create a PowerPoint presentation summarizing their INDOT internship experience.
