About The Position

The summer internship program allows participants to work with state agency officials and participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experiences. Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on predetermined projects that enhance college-level skills and abilities. The co-curricular components of the program ensure competitive, reputable, and inclusive experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort weekly activities designed to enable: Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation Exposure to many facets of state government Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort About the Legal Services Internship: The Legal Services team provides legal advice to the entire agency. The Legal Services team serves as in-house counsel for a thirty-billion-dollar enterprise in state and local tax. We ensure adherence to regulations in various state agreements, including memoranda of understanding (MOUs) and data sharing agreements (DSAs), while also negotiating professional services contracts, securing and maintaining legal compliance with said agreements, and handling real estate matters. We are looking for two or three legal interns to join the team during the summer of 2026. Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • Academic work in related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and drafting contracts, settlement agreements, policies, and manuals.
  • Reviewing agency correspondence for legal accuracy.
  • Working closely with other divisions and executive staff at DOR.
  • Researching state and federal laws.
  • Writing memoranda.
  • Reviewing and analyzing legal documents.
  • Assisting in responding to public records requests.
  • Monitoring and engaging in legal developments in the motor carrier services industry.
  • Providing input and suggestions on best practices.
  • Learning how DOR and state government operates.
