About The Position

The American Retirement Association is seeking a student majoring in public policy, financial services, or related majors/minors to intern with our Government Affairs team. Located in Arlington, VA, near the Ballston Metro station, we offer a vibrant working environment and a paid internship opportunity. In addition to the experiences below, the Government Affairs Summer Intern will have an opportunity to gain onsite event experience with our members and Government Affairs team at our annual NAPA D.C. Fly-In Forum, where we conduct in-person meetings with members of the U.S. Congress.

Requirements

  • Multitasking, planning, and organization skills.
  • Interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully both in writing and verbally with public officials across the political spectrum regardless of party affiliation.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Social media platform navigation.
  • Student majoring in public policy, financial services, or related majors/minors.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Government Affairs team in outreach and education efforts for elected officials at the Federal and State levels of government regarding the private retirement system and tax reform (Hill Meetings).
  • Research trends, write, and develop engagement materials to use online and in person to describe how working Americans save for retirement.
  • Track and report member participation in Political Action Committee campaigns, including updating member records in the Aristotle database.
  • Assist with outreach efforts relevant to the growth of the Political Action Committee and grassroots initiatives.
  • Assist in monitoring and analyzing legislation and regulations that impact the retirement industry.
  • Support the Government Affairs team in analyzing and summarizing complex matters for various audiences.
  • Learn from association executives, attend Government Affairs department meetings, and participate in local events when appropriate.
