About The Position

The Space Exploration Group Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks to design and integrate GN&C systems for projects ranging from CubeSats to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). We are searching for highly qualified candidates to support the design, development, and oversight of the Human Lander Systems (HLS) Program in the Control Systems Design and Analysis branch at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center as the Deputy GN&C POC for SpaceX. The role will focus on GN&C discussions with SpaceX's GN&C lead about everything GN&C, such as orbit insertion, decent guidance/landing, controllability, rendezvous, proximity, operations and docking (RPOD), manual steering, etc. This exciting work will serve as a critical step in sending humans back to the Moon, Mars and beyond!

Requirements

  • A degree in Aerospace, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience performing modeling, simulation, and analysis of launch vehicles and/or spacecraft Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) systems.
  • Proficiency in GN&C analysis tools and software (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, STK, Python, etc.) and relevant spacecraft design and test methods.
  • Relevant experience performing GN&C insight/oversight for spaceflight.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead cross-functional teams with internal and external partners.
  • Experience with risk management and technical issue resolution related to GN&C systems.
  • Experience with planning and resource allocation for GN&C tasks.
  • In-depth understanding of spacecraft mission design and experience with system engineering principles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience modeling, simulating, designing, and analyzing sensors/actuators and algorithms in Flight Mechanics areas.
  • Familiarity with Artemis mission concepts of operations and SpaceX launch, landing, and space vehicles' processes.
  • Proven ability to identify, engage, and coordinate GN&C experts.
  • Familiarity with NASA's spaceflight certification processes.
  • Experience with university partnerships to enhance GN&C capabilities and skills.
  • Relevant certifications in project management, such as PMP (Project Management Professional).

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a NASA GN&C POC and interfaces with NASA's HLS partners and cross-program organizations (Orion/Gateway/SLS).
  • Works closely with partner and cross-program organizations to resolve open requirements, and assist requirement maturation, seek understanding of a partner's design/test data, potentially participate in partners' tests, and lead Working Group meetings between partner and cross-program organizations.
  • Develop, track, and communicate HLS GN&C risks, concerns, and watch items associated with a particular partner to the HLS program.
  • Develop, present, and execute the HLS GN&C discipline elevated insight plans, independent analysis conducted by the HLS GN&C discipline, to inform HLS of design/mission risks.
  • Lead HLS-GN&C insight meetings, NASA-only and with a partner. Support other HLS meetings as needed, with partners and NASA-only.
  • Provide status of HLS GN&C key insight activities to HLS (SVS and SE&I), and MSFC-EV department on a weekly/bi-weekly basis.
  • Steward insight plan execution, including planning and direct analysis products and their fidelity.
  • Supports insight development of Planning, Programming, Budgeting, and Execution (PPBE) cycles for the HLS GN&C discipline.
  • Actively find NASA expert reviewers to assess key areas of partner risk.
  • Ensure HLS GN&C resources are utilized effectively to cover high priority insight tasks.
  • Work with potential university partnerships to enhance skills in Guidance and Control.
