The Global Patient Services Coordinator supervises one or more Global Patient Services Specialists, ensuring accurate, efficient and compassionate handling of the entire international patient referral and acceptance process. For the acute patient referral program, Coordinators serve as program leads under the department’s 24/7 on-call schedule. As leads, Coordinators oversee patient cases from initial referral until patients arrive at an SHC hospital. Coordinators will receive incoming patient referrals from hospitals, Shriners, foundations and other referral sources for patients with acute burns and other injuries. Coordinators must determine best-fit Shriners hospitals based on patients’ conditions and bed availability, prepare medical cases in English, establish and facilitate doctor-to-doctor communication (interpreting, as appropriate), negotiate transportation timing, crews, equipment, and quotations with air ambulance providers, manage humanitarian parole and consent processes, and find/confirm financial sponsorships for patient transportation costs. For non-acute patients, Coordinators work closely with all levels of administrative and medical staff at Shriners Children’s locations to facilitate patient acceptance, approvals, and care planning. The Coordinator also works with the International Clinical Professional to ensure comprehensive medical records and chart reviews. The Coordinator is responsible for successful patient passport and US visa applications and/or humanitarian parole requests, including communication and medical justifications to satisfy US Consular Service and Dept. of Homeland Security legal requirements. Coordinators also identify and coordinate with external organizations and governments for non-medical expense sponsorship. Finally, Coordinators are responsible for planning HQ-managed international outreach clinics held in their assigned geographic regions. This includes patient selection, medical record compilation, and collaboration with host organizations as well as arranging research, training and education initiatives.
