About The Position

The Global Functional Safety Engineer will lead strategic functional safety, combustible dust and reactive hazard program improvements. This role will act as a Subject Matter Expert for these management systems across the globe. This position focuses on risk mitigation strategies and collaborates closely with engineering, technology, maintenance, operations leaders, site leaders, and the EHS organization to provide support in a manner that addresses business needs. The Global Functional Safety Engineer is responsible for providing strategic risk reduction for EHS & Process Safety risks. Requirements

  • BS degree in Engineering discipline such as Chemical Engineering/Mechanical/Electrical
  • 10+ years of implementation of Process Safety risk assessment methodologies PHA/HAZOP, and LOPA.
  • 20+ years of experience in chemical or industrial environments.
  • Proven track record of delivering sustainable improvements in Functional Safety and Process Safety.
  • Experience in functional safety lifecycle analysis phase using LOPA as SIL determination method.
  • Experience in incident investigation
  • Strong project management and leadership skills, including the ability to prioritize, balance and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, adjust to changing priorities and make decisions with speed and accuracy based on available information.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, technical writing, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, team player, capable of working within globally diverse, cross-functional, internal and external teams across different time zones with ability to effectively influence others to action.
  • Ability to collaborate in a global organization, communicate effectively across mediums, audiences and situations.
  • Unquestioned ethics and integrity including the ability to work on confidential matters.
  • Proven experience consulting and troubleshooting to allow development of sound resolution of issues.
  • Strong Computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Demonstrated capability to take initiative to drive change.
  • Demonstrated capability and passion to learn new skills

Nice To Haves

  • Functional Safety Certification IEC-61511
  • Preferred degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • Cause Map Facilitator training and certification
  • 10+ years of process engineering experience
  • 10+ years’ experience EHS/Process Safety auditing including Lead Auditor role
  • Experience in Dust Hazard Analysis.
  • Experience in Reactive Hazards program.
  • Experience in developing and delivering EHS/PSM training using Adult Learning Theory

Responsibilities

  • Work in close collaboration with the Operations Council and EHS Council Executive Leadership Team members, to manage functional safety, reactive hazards and Combustible Dust Global risk reduction initiatives.
  • Support a global effort of harmonizing and standardizing risk assessment and management practices across the company using HAZOP and LOPA methodologies.
  • Engage in the Cross Site Engineering team to ensure designs are in conformance with applicable RAGAGEP.
  • Lead and manage EHS Capital projects through stage-gate process and report quarterly progress to the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Lead global initiative to identify and analyze exothermic batch reactions to ensure adequate layers of protection.
  • Lead global initiative to focus on preventing unintended reactions with incompatible chemicals.
  • Develop and implement a global strategy for Dust Hazard Analysis, identifying and reducing combustible dust risks for all operations.
  • Evaluate hazards of raw materials storage (flammability, combustibility, reactivity.)
  • Conduct Global Scenario Risk Based Audits, present findings to EHS council, create corrective actions with Gensuite EHS information management system, and track their implementation.
  • Create and update corporate policies on Combustible Dust, Dust Hazard Analysis, SIL determination using LOPA, Functional Safety, reactive hazards evaluation and pressure relief design.
  • Lead and conduct Global Process Safety and EHS compliance audits.
  • Develop, track, and evaluate leading metrics to identify trends and drive improvement.
  • Support PHA Facilitator Qualification and Cause Map Facilitator programs.
  • Understand and analyze findings (i.e. related to audits, incidents, etc.) to identify common issues and facilitate consistency in recommendations and corrective action.
  • Develop programs and train company personnel as needed to support Functional Safety and Process Safety activities
  • Coach and mentor others in subject matter expertise.
  • Provide in person, in depth support, to assist with organizational skill development.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
