About The Position

The purpose of the Global Food Safety Lead is to provide deep technical expertise in the areas of food safety, microbiology, HACCP and cleaning, and sanitization for the Global Food and Nutrition segment including externally manufactured products. This role is responsible for the governance, competency capability and continuous improvement of the food safety management program. It is the responsibility of the job holder to develop, approve, implement & validate food safety plans to ensure the Mars Food portfolio meets the global internal and external requirements. This role is a member of the Global Food Safety Team. This role partners with site Q&FS Managers and food safety leads to develop and drive the global microbiology and food safety strategy. The jobholder will also interact on a global level with the center of expertise for microbiology. Their main interfaces outside Q&FS are with Commercial (sourcing, commercial operations, and supplier quality), Product Development and Supply (operations).

Requirements

  • Bachelor/ Master’s degree in food microbiology, food safety, animal science or related field
  • At least 5 years’ experience of working in food manufacturing, preferably with quality and/or food safety management experience
  • Strong knowledge of USDA regulatory requirements
  • Deep functional expertise of all aspects of food safety risk identification and management
  • Knowledge of HACCP and prerequisite controls
  • Knowledge of food allergens, cleaning and sanitation, chemical food safety and food safety regulations

Responsibilities

  • Acts as the Food Safety Standard Subject Management Expert (SME) (e.g. GMP, Cleaning & Sanitation, HACCP, Allergens, Environmental monitoring, Micro) specifically responsible for: Supporting the development of Global Food and Nutrition Q&FS standards related to new processes, technologies and/or methods and leads the effective implementation across the segment. Consulting on new/revised document finalization Providing input into training materials and delivering segment training. Provide feedback on cross-segment and Corporate document development to the Food Quality Team
  • Provides science-based solutions and expert support for food safety incidents across the segment. Interprets sensitive and technical data for their potential impact on product microbiological safety and provides timely recommendations for the effective resolution of microbiological issues.
  • Designs and manages challenge studies to understand the impact of new product formulations and processes on product shelf life, microbiological stability and microbiological risk mitigation including CCP validations.
  • Drives microbiological and food safety competency across the segment by developing and delivering training to site associates across Supply, Commercial (SQA) and R&D.
  • Leads key projects that continuously improve Food Safety management and performance (processes, standards, and tools)
