About The Position

The Glazing Estimator is responsible for procuring new work and ensuring a smooth transition of awarded projects to the project management team for execution. This role develops accurate project estimates by evaluating drawings, specifications, and contract requirements, and by determining project durations, labor needs, material requirements, budgets, and potential risks. The Glazing Estimator coordinates with internal teams, customers, vendors, and subcontractors, uses estimating software to perform detailed takeoffs, and prepares competitive, well-defined proposals that support the company’s operational and financial objectives. Our search is currently limited to qualified candidates living within the Hampton Roads commuting area.

Requirements

  • Currently working towards or already obtained a B.S. in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field position OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 years of industry experience, preferably in commercial glazing construction.
  • Knowledge of Construction estimating, means and methods, accounting, document administration, and understanding of industry practices.
  • Experience with construction industry scheduling software.

  • This is an in-person, on-site position.

Responsibilities

  • Estimate and win jobs that align with company goals and at the direction of executive management.
  • Review drawings, specifications, and contract documents to identify scope gaps, design risks, constructability issues, and commercial exposure prior to bid submission.
  • Perform detailed material takeoffs for glazing systems, including curtain wall, storefront, windows, entrances, louvers, and related architectural metals.
  • Attend all pre-bid and pre-construction meetings with project managers.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and level subcontractor and supplier quotes to ensure accurate scope coverage and pricing alignment.
  • Negotiate scopes of work and pricing with subcontractors prior to award.
  • Assist contract administration in writing and developing technical and administrative proposal requirements and QC and finalize proposals before delivering to customers.
  • Develop clarifications, exclusions, and qualifications for proposals to properly manage risk and define scope.
  • Create and manage business development relationships with customers and subcontractors in the company’s target market.
  • Meet annual goals, adjusted quarterly, for quantity and value of jobs bid and won.
  • Liaise on contract paperwork between the customer and executive management for review and execution.
  • Create initial project budgets and review with executive management and the project manager before finalizing and sending to contract administration.
  • Support value engineering and alternate pricing efforts to improve competitiveness and project profitability.
  • Help develop project schedule of values and preliminary project schedules prior to the start of work.
  • Acquire and assemble submittal packages in accordance with job specifications and work with the project manager and customer for architect and owner approval.
  • Help develop project-specific safety plans by providing required information to the corporate safety manager and coordinating to meet company safety objectives and contract requirements.
  • Participate in post-award buyout strategy with project management to ensure budgets, scopes, and subcontractor selections align with the estimate.
  • Hand off job to the project manager at the start of on-site work with full details, including final plans and specs, all addenda, schedules, schedule of values, customer POCs, subcontractor POCs, safety plans and AHAs, estimate file and takeoff, and all other necessary project information.
  • Transition all customer and subcontractor communication to the project manager at project start, remaining available for consultation while maintaining clear lines of responsibility.
  • Assist project managers in investigating unforeseen conditions, writing RFIs, issuing PCOs, negotiating change orders, and supporting general contract management.
  • Track bid pipeline, hit rates, and estimate performance metrics and report results to executive management.
  • Maintain and improve estimating databases, pricing models, and historical cost information for glazing systems and materials.
  • Stay current on glazing systems, code requirements, manufacturer systems, and industry best practices affecting pricing, compliance, and constructability.
