About The Position

DeKalb County is seeking a detail-oriented and service-driven GIS Technician to support and enhance the County's Geographic Information Systems operations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining accurate cadastral maps and spatial data and providing GIS assistance to the public and County departments. The GIS Technician is responsible for cadastral mapping and collecting, maintaining, analyzing, and mapping spatial data to support County operations. This role works closely with County departments and the public to ensure accurate and reliable GIS information.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • GIS Certificate or documented GIS training
  • Experience in a related GIS role
  • Experience with Hexagon GeoMedia and/or ESRI ArcGIS Pro
  • Proficiency with tools interfacing with GIS data (Adobe PDF, Excel, Microsoft Access, ESRI Shapefiles, etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to assist the public
  • Ability to read and interpret legal descriptions
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Online, Experience Builder, Dashboards, and related ESRI tools
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience with Python scripting for GIS
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer workstation
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to travel to field sites as needed

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and improve GIS data and layers
  • Create and maintain digital cadastral/parcel base maps, including parcel splits, combinations, and subdivisions
  • Interpret conveyance documents, legal descriptions, and related records
  • Calculate farmland measurements
  • Serve as the first point of contact for public mapping inquiries and community requests
  • Produce custom maps on demand
  • Perform routine quality control and assurance to ensure data accuracy and compliance
  • Identify user issues and provide technical GIS support
  • Contribute to GIS database development and implementation
  • Maintain 911 map layers for emergency response, police, and fire agencies
  • Process GIS data orders
  • Participate in GIS presentations and training sessions
  • Stay current with GIS industry trends, software, and technical developments
  • Support fieldwork and interpret aerial photography
  • Perform related duties as assigned
