The purpose of this classification is to coordinate activities involving the collection, development, and maintenance of County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data, perform associated mapping functions, and provide technical services/support to County departments. The GIS Technician will operate and maintain the County/City geographic information system (GIS) base maps, which include parcels, ownership, roads, subdivisions, rights-of-way, zoning, and tax digest corrections. This role involves updating data in the GIS database and entering mapping parcel data from various sources such as deeds, plats, plots, and surveys into the GIS system. The technician will also revise and update parcel maps, create and combine parcels, issue parcel numbers, and redefine property lines while ensuring accuracy in property ownership and acreage. In addition to these responsibilities, the GIS Technician will conduct data collection research utilizing maps, deeds, legal/court records, and other sources to collect and organize data for report generation. They will maintain and continually update relational databases containing geographic-related and other relevant data sets, create and modify data files, and assist in composing and plotting maps using computer-aided drafting. The technician will also review recorded documentation for right-of-way, zoning, and other County agencies to ensure compliance with applicable statutes and ordinances. Quality control of data entering the system is crucial, and the technician will maintain a tracking system to reflect changes in acreage and parcel statuses. The role requires effective communication with various stakeholders, including supervisors, employees, property owners, realtors, and outside agencies, to coordinate work activities and resolve issues. The GIS Technician must maintain a comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, stay updated on new technologies and trends in the profession, and participate in professional development opportunities such as conferences and workshops. Additional functions may include general clerical tasks and providing assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
