About The Position

The Geographic Information System (GIS) Supervisor position at the City of Tucson’s Water Department supervises staff, coordinates project’s, ensures compliance with organizational standards and regulations, and ensures the accurate collection, management, analysis, and delivery of spatial data to support the Water Department's infrastructure and services. Work is performed under the supervision of the GIS Management Coordinator. This position exercises supervision over Geographic Information Systems personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Two (2) years of directly related experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • A valid and unrestricted driver’s license with two (2) years of licensed driving is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of experience, with at least one year in a lead, project management, or supervisory role.
  • GIS software/databases/automated mapping/drafting, particularly related to utilities (water, sewer, storm drain, gas).
  • Civil engineering and/or other engineering disciplines.
  • Land Surveying.
  • Geography/Cartography/Planning.
  • Computer science.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises GIS Section personnel through task assignment, performance monitoring, and by providing guidance through training and mentorship
  • Determines priorities for tasks and assesses needs of other divisions
  • Collaborates with engineers, field teams, and Project managers
  • Supervises the creation of GIS products
  • Reviews GIS work for accuracy, completeness, and neatness.
  • Develops new and or modifies existing quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) processes as directed, which may include GIS Standards or Standard Operating Procedures, to ensure data accuracy and integrity
  • Reviews current practices and recommends or makes changes for efficiency or effectiveness
  • Ensures compliance with related laws and ordinances
  • Communicates and presents policies and changes to GIS staff and upper management.
  • Participates in the selection of staff
  • Provides or coordinates staff training
  • Supports vendor and product evaluations
  • Conducts mapping research in the office and in the field to resolve conflicting information and to ensure data accuracy.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
