About The Position

Summary The Coach / Activity Sponsor is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising an assigned extracurricular program. This position promotes student growth, leadership, teamwork, and school spirit while ensuring a safe and positive environment for all participants. The Coach / Activity Sponsor provides instruction in skills and strategies, organizes practices or meetings, and supervises students during competitions, events, and activities. All athletic programs must follow Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) rules and regulations , while student clubs and activities must adhere to district policies and national or state organizational guidelines. This role supports the Scott County R-IV School District Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) by encouraging student engagement, wellness, and achievement beyond the classroom. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The individual who holds this position has the responsibility to: Plan, organize, and supervise practices, meetings, events, competitions, and/or performances. Teach fundamental skills, strategies, and rules of the assigned activity or sport. Promote teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship or citizenship. Supervise students at all times, including before, during, and after practices, games, events, trips, or performances. Ensure compliance with MSHSAA rules and regulations for athletic programs and district/national organizational guidelines for activities and clubs. Monitor student eligibility and academic performance in collaboration with administration. Maintain and inventory equipment, uniforms, supplies, and activity materials. Communicate effectively with students, parents, officials, and school staff. Enforce safety procedures and respond to injuries or emergencies appropriately. Participate in required meetings, training, and professional development (MSHSAA, NFHS, or activity-based as applicable). Represent the district positively at all extracurricular events. Support CSIP goals related to student engagement, wellness, and achievement. Maintain the focus on student academic success. Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director, Principal, or Superintendent. Supervisory Duties The Coach / Activity Sponsor supervises all student participants during practices, meetings, games, events, and team-related activities. Head Coaches or Lead Sponsors may supervise assistant coaches, assistant sponsors, volunteers, or student managers. Qualifications Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s Degree in Education preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Coaches: Must meet all MSHSAA requirements , including CPR/First Aid, coaching education, and NFHS certifications. Activity Sponsors: Must meet requirements established by the district and national/local activity organizations. Valid Missouri teaching certificate preferred. Skills and Abilities Knowledge of rules, strategies, and fundamentals of the assigned sport or activity. Ability to motivate, guide, and develop students. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic responsibility. Commitment to student safety, well-being, and positive development. Physical Demands May be required to demonstrate physical movements or skills related to the sport or activity. Must occasionally lift and/or move equipment up to 50 pounds. Must be able to react quickly in emergency situations. Attendance Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position, including evenings, weekends, and travel for practices, competitions, performances, and events. Conditions and Environment The individual who occupies this position will regularly work in athletic facilities, classrooms, or performance spaces, often in hot, cold, or inclement weather. Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board Policy and MSHSAA/activity standards where applicable. Requirements
