About The Position

The Surgical Technologist (Endoscopy Technician) assists physicians and healthcare providers during endoscopic procedures, ensuring optimal patient care and procedural efficiency. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to anticipate the needs of the physician, along with providing quality patient care during the endoscopy procedure. They are responsible for preparing the procedure room, performing manual decontamination and disinfection of endoscopic equipment, and providing staff support throughout the procedure. The technician also ensures compliance with infection control standards and supports the medical team by assisting with the operating and manipulation of endoscopic camera.

Requirements

  • Minimum education required: Graduation from accredited practical nurse program (PN).
  • Minimum experience preferred: 1 year experience working as an LPN in healthcare setting.
  • Minimum certification required: Licensure in state of Indiana as a Practical Nurse; BLS certification

Responsibilities

  • Set up procedure rooms with necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Verify functionality of endoscopy equipment and resolve any technical issues.
  • Log into procedure specific documentation software.
  • Assist in positioning of patients according to procedure requirements.
  • Participate in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
  • Operate and adjust endoscopic equipment as directed by the physician.
  • Anticipate the needs of the physician by passing instruments and supplies to physician during procedure.
  • Prepare and anticipate additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
  • Measure and pass medications, hemostatic agents and tattoo markers utilized during procedure.
  • Assist with instrumentation as directed by the physician.
  • Apply the electrosurgical grounding pad.
  • Maintain safety and infection control standards during the procedure.
  • Prepare and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
  • Manual decontaminate and disinfect instruments following procedure.
  • Assist in prepping the procedure room for the next patient.
  • Participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
  • Monitor the comfort of the patient and provide verbal and tactile reassurance to the patient.
  • Assist the anesthesia provider.
  • Assist with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.
  • Complete the patient skin prep prior to draping by the sterile procedure begins.
  • Update and keep accurate records of the surgeon’s preference.
