Through funding provided by the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Summer Internship program, the Museum Department of the Skirball Cultural Center offers one summer internship for a qualified undergraduate student. The Curatorial Intern will have the opportunity to learn about museum curatorial work as a career pathway and to gain hands-on experience in many facets of museum work. This position focuses on exhibition development for a major fall 2025 contemporary art exhibition: Draw Them In, Paint Them Out: Trenton Doyle Hancock Confronts Philip Guston. This exhibition presents the work of painter Philip Guston (American, b. Canada 1913-1980), the child of Jewish immigrants from Odessa (present-day Ukraine), and Trenton Doyle Hancock (American, b. 1974), a leading Black contemporary artist based in Houston, Texas, in dialogue for the first time. It explores resonant connections between their work and the role that artists play in the pursuit of social justice. The intern will work closely with the Museum team on different stages of exhibition development and will gain experience in exhibition research, checklist development, writing of in-gallery text, and the design and installation process. Additionally, the intern will do in-gallery observation and evaluation of current temporary exhibitions. Specific assignments will vary depending on departmental needs and the intern's interests.
