About The Position

The NHMLAC is seeking a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Intern, Exhibition Development (GMU Intern) for our Exhibitions department. The GMU Intern works closely with the Exhibition Developers to create new exhibition content. This involves detailed research, visitor evaluation, concept prototyping, and writing engaging labels. The GMU Intern will help the Exhibition Developers create engaging new exhibitions for NHMLAC. Project work will involve researching content for an exhibition on the Channel Islands, creating keys for habitat dioramas, assisting in the installation of new exhibitions on cats and minerals, prototyping concepts with visitors, writing new labels, and working with Exhibition Designers to produce visually captivating layouts. No previous museum experience is required but the GMU Intern must have strong research and writing skills and be able to work independently as well as in large, diverse teams. The GMU Intern will get real world experience developing new exhibitions as well as incredible educational opportunities from both NHMLAC and the internship's sponsor, the Getty Foundation.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate in either a bachelor's degree program or an associate's degree program.
  • Completed at least one semester or two quarters of college by June.
  • Attend college in or be a permanent resident of LA County.
  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
  • Able to complete the full 10 consecutive weeks of the internship.

  • Strong research skills and ability to consolidate information from multiple sources.
  • Comfortable working around real biological specimens like taxidermied animals.
  • Strong Google Suite skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with research and label writing for new exhibitions.
  • Create keys for habitat group dioramas.
  • Help install exhibitions about cats and minerals.
  • Assist Exhibition Developers in conducting prototyping and visitor evaluation for exhibitions.
  • Other duties as assigned by Exhibitions Developers and departmental needs.
